History of The USA Hockey Foundation

Hockey has been part of the American sporting culture since before the turn of the 20th century.  Until only recently it was considered a regional sport limited to cold-climate locales such as New England, Michigan, Minnesota and New York.  However, significant USA Hockey membership growth in the Sun Belt and surprising finishes by teams from warm-weather regions in recent USA Hockey Select Festivals and national championships provide the latest evidence that hockey has shed this image and truly has a national footprint.

With the addition of inline hockey to the organization's programming in 1994, ice is no longer a necessity to play the game.  All-purpose facilities continue to sprout up across the country, providing more opportunities for participants.

The USA Hockey Foundation was created to help those who desire to learn and enjoy our great sport, but lack the means to participate.  As we seize new opportunities and challenges in the 21st century, we will continue to raise monies and grant funds in order to make hockey available to all Americans regardless of economic or physical limitations.

The USA Hockey Foundation was established in 1989 by members of USA Hockey, Inc.  The Foundation's activities include fundraising, grant making, investment management, and the administration of intellectual property license agreements.  Members of the Board of Directors sit on working committees in the areas of Finance, Investments, Grants, Licensing, Bylaws and Development.  The Development Committee also has subcommittees for Major Gifts, Planned Giving and Annual Fund.

The USA Hockey Foundation's total assets were $18.2 million as of August 2006.  Our endowment continues to grow through individual and corporate gifts, managed by the United States Olympic Foundation and our chief investment officer, Hirtle, Callaghan and Co.  The USA Hockey Foundation currently solicits external funding sources through its corporate marketing, special events, national awards, direct mail, capital, and gift and estate planning efforts.

Since 1992, the Foundation has granted more than $5.2 million to programs, projects and charitable organizations that meet the guidelines of the Foundation's mission in promoting ice and inline hockey.
